Nigeria: Gunmen Attack Soldiers in Borno

Maiduguri — Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members Sunday night opened fired on some soldiers deployed to maintain peace in the Jajeri area of Maiduguri, wounding one.
Our correspondent learnt that the gunmen fired several shots as people ran for safety. The soldiers were said to have engaged them in a gun battle before they fled.
The Nigerian Army 21 Armoured Brigade Public Relations Officer Lieutenant Abubakar Abdullahi said the incident happened around 7:20pm Sunday when the soldiers were just returning from patrol. He added that the gunmen might have been monitoring them before the attack. According to the Army spokesman, the gunmen who are nine in number hid atop the roof of houses and trees from where they opened fired on the soldiers.
Lieutenant Abdullahi said some arrests had been made in connection with the attack while investigations continue. He assured that the Army was ready to protect lives and property.
