Nigerian runaway bomb suspect recaptured: source

Nigerian security forces recaptured on Friday the main suspect in a deadly Christmas Day bomb attack who escapedfrom police custody last month, a state security source said.

Kabiru Sokoto’s escape on January 18 was described by security sources as “unusual and suspicious” and it prompted President Goodluck Jonathan to sack the chief of police and his six deputies.

Islamist sect Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the bombing of St. Theresa Catholic Church inMadalla, on the outskirts of Abuja, which killed 37 people and wounded 57, the deadliest of a series of attacks at Christmas.

Police arrested Sokoto on January 17 and while they were taking him from the police headquarters to his house in Abaji, just outside Abuja, to conduct a search there, their vehicle came under fire and Sokoto escaped. He was recaptured on Friday in the eastern stateof Taraba, which borders neighboring West African country Chad.

“Yes, we arrested him this morning in a small hut in Mutum Biu in Taraba State. He’s being flown to Abuja about now,” a State Security Service source told Reuters.

Jonathan, who has been heavily criticized for failing to deal with Boko Haram’s campaign of violence, will be relieved at Sokoto’s recapture. Jonathan has said members of the sect have infiltrated the security services and he has ordered a comprehensive reorganization of the police force.

Boko Haram, which in the Hausa language of northern Nigeria means “Western education is sinful,” is loosely modeled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.

It killed more than 500 people last year and more than 250 in the first weeks of 2012 in gun and bomb attacks, Human Rights Watch says.

The bearded knucklehead was captured at a very remote Mutum Biu by the SSS and has been swiftly airlifted from Taraba State to Abuja by the Nigerian Air Force. Kabiru Sokoto has already been paraded before the media by the SSS.

It is as true as the sky is blue, buddy – NO “buts” or “ifs” about that.

    Heroic performance.

The SSS are pulling off impressive stunts and showing a level of sophistication and ruthless efficiency in their operations which we would normally associate with Israeli intelligence – their primary foreign operational trainers not surprisingly.

When this insurgency kicked off about 15 months ago, we did say that whether Nigerians or foreigners howl themselves hoarse or not, terrorism has added a new challenge to our repertoir of battlefield experiences spanning an uninterrupted period of 20+ years going back to 1990 – rural counterinsurgency (Liberia and Sierra Leone), urban guerrilla warfare(Somalia, Liberia and Sierra) and littoral warfare(Bakassi Peninsula and the Niger Delta). However, this business of bombing public places and SUICIDE BOMBING hitherto unheard of across all of West and Central Africa, we said, was going to entail a learning curve which can be fast-tracked but not at all circumvented and we were sure that the defence and security forces would learn fast.

Well after the botched June 16 bomb attack on the Police Headquarters in Abuja, matters moved from serious to critical.

Since the maiden attacks on Damaturu and Potiskum last November, the SSS have beaten back several suicide attacks and arrested three A-List terrorists and members of the insurgents’ High Council – al-Zawahiri, Abul Qaqa and Kabiru Sokoto.

The SSS are doing qualitative work. We hope that they make the best, even better. In over 25 years of observing African conflicts, I cannot recall three rebel heavyweights having been caught in one decade and I am not joking.

Take the Sudanese conflicts for example. What the SSS are pulling off and making it seem to be a tea party would have been as astonishing as arresting SPLA A-Listers and high lieutenants of the immortal Colonel John Garang de Mabior such as Dr Riek Machar, Salva Kiir and Pagan Amun within a three-month period.

Those who know the level at which these aforementioned insurrectionists operated would be able to appreciate just how important within the ranks of the BH insurgents these SSS captives really are. The SSS have netted very big hitters.

Looks like a normal Naija guy, non of the bearded affectations.

So maybe the security forces can stop executing people with beard in the North

Hopefully he’ll be interrogated and the truth about the backers will come out and be acted on

But (and I never thought I’d say this) I’m actually loving the SSS right now. Look at what they can achieve when left to focus on national security and not government opponents

The fugitive alleged mastermind of the Christmas Day bombing of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger, was re-arrested on Friday by the State Security Service (SSS). Kabiru Abubakar Dikko, alias Kabiru Sokoto

The spokesperson for the SSS, Mrs
Marilyn Ogar, told newsmen in Abuja
on Friday that Kabiru Abubakar Dikko,
alias Kabiru Sokoto, was arrested at
    Mutum in Gassol Local Government
Area of Taraba. Dikko was first arrested on Jan. 13 by the police but escaped from custody two days later when he was being taken to his residence at Abaji in the FCT for a search.

Ogar said Dikko was rearrested in a joint military-SSS operation at a hideout at about 4:30 a.m.on Friday “Kabiru Sokoto was picked up from where he was hiding in a clothes rack at the residence of an accomplice.

“On his escape, he had taken refuge at
    Umaisha in Toto Local Government
Area of Nasarawa State before he
fled to Taraba where he was
eventually re-arrested,’’ she said. Ogar did not name the accomplice or
say whether they had the accomplice
    also in custody.

Ogar warned that perpetrators of evil would be brought to book and assured Nigerians that the security agencies were determined to end the activities of “unscrupulous elements’’ in the country. “We are poised to bring to an end the activities of a few unscrupulous elements,” she said, and warned that the law would always catch up with perpetrators of evil.

Ogar said the 29-year-old suspect was born to the family of Umaru Jabbi of Gagi village in Sokoto South Local Government Area on May 9, 1983. She explained that upon the death of his father, the suspect’s uncle,Abubakar Dikko, adopted him and gave him his name.

The spokesperson said that the suspect, who completed his secondary education in 2003, was admitted to the College of Nursing and Midwifery, Sokoto, and described him as a “truant with extremist tendencies”.

She said the suspect was declared a leader of the Boko Haram sect in Sokoto in February, 2009. The police had declared Dikko wanted shortly after he escaped from custody with a N50 million bounty for information that might lead to his arrest.

HOW BOKO HARAM ESCAPEE KABIRU SOKOTO WAS RE-ARRESTED

    THE NATION
    11 Februaru, 2011

Kabiru Sokoto, the Boko Haram strategist who cost the immediate past Inspector General of Police and six of his lieutenants their jobs and put the nation on edge, was re-arrested yesterday hiding behind a rack of drying clothes.

He was caught with his elder brother in a hut at Mutum Biu village in Taraba State. He had been on the run for 25 days after escaping from a team of policemen who had taken him to Abaji, near Abuja, for a search of his residence. The policemen were attacked by some youths who freed Kabiru.

The policemen and the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Zakari Biu,investigating the suspect are now under probe over the escape. The immediate past IGP, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, six of his lieutenants were sacked on account of Kabir Sokoto’s escape.

He is believed to be the mastermind of
the Christmas Day bombing of St.Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla. Kabiru and his elder brother, in whose
company he was arrested, were flown to
Abuja at about 1pm yesterday from
Jalingo in an Air Force Plane. The SSS immediately briefed the presidency and other security agencies accordingly.

The Nation yesterday reported that Kabiru Sokoto had not fled the country contrary to speculations and that the SSS and military intelligence were hopeful that he would be arrested soon.

It was gathered that the suspect was picked up from his hide-out between 5am and 6am. The SSS had to intervene in the hunt for the suspect following the inability of the Nigeria Police to re-arrest him.

The source said: “After trailing him for
about three weeks, we succeeded in re-
arresting him at Mutum Biu village on
    Friday along Wukari-Jalingo Highway.

“During the dawn raid, Kabiru Sokoto
sandwiched himself in the clothes rack
within the compound to evade arrest but our vigilant operatives located him. He was re-arrested with his elder brother.

“The SSS team took time to ascertain that it was Kabiru Sokoto that was really re-arrested. Apart from his photograph and finger prints, a few security searches were also conducted. Thereafter, the SSS broke the news.

“From the village, he was taken to Jalingo where the Air Force flew him and his elder brother to Abuja in a special flight. We are suspecting that his elder brother had been shielding him or might have been his guide in the escape bid. “A team has been raised to interrogate both of them.

“Following SSS intervention, the suspect was initially located at Toto Village in Nasarawa State where he was constantly in touch with the detained spokesman of Boko Haram, Abu Qaqa. “He got to Toto from Abaji where he escaped from a police team that went to search his house.

Throughout his stay in Toto, the call logs revealed how he strategised with the Boko Haram spokesman. “We suspect that he became frustrated and opted to relocate to Taraba from Nasarawa following the arrest of Abu Qaqa.

“But security agencies were careful in invading Toto to avoid unnecessary loss of lives. Yet,Sokoto seized the opportunity to disguise with his elder brother, and relocated to Taraba State
