THE Senate Committee on Defence and
Army yesterday arrived the 82 division of
the Nigerian Army headquarters in Enugu to assess the combat readiness of the troops, and ascertain the number of
soldiers on ground towards tackling the contemporary security challenges in the
country.
The Committee, led by its Vice Chairman,
Senator Jubril Bidowo, was received by
the Chief of Staff of the Division, Brig-
General Kabiru Abdulkarim, who stood in
for the General Officer Commanding the
division, Major General Olayinka Oshinowo.
Bidowo explained that the committee
embarked on the visit to interface with
the officers and know the level of arms
training, which they undergo. “The visit
will also enable us ascertain the degree
of combat support available to the troops,” he stated. He also said “some of the capital projects that were completed or ongoing will be inspected as contained in the 2012 budget, and in line with the Senate’s oversight function to ensure that value is obtained for monies expended.”
The Chief of Staff of the Division, Brig.
General Abdulkarim, had earlier told
members of the committee that most of
the projects had been commissioned by
the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General
Azubuike Ihejirika.
