Nigeria’s army killed 12 suspected Islamist militants in a gun battle late yesterday, the military said, as Taliban-inspired Boko Haram threatened to attack phone service providers for cooperating with authorities.
Two soldiers were injured when Boko Haram suspects opened fire on a military patrol in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, Hassan Mohammed, a spokesman for the military’s joint task force said today by phone from the city.
A person identifying himself as Boko Haram’s spokesman said today his group killed 12 soldiers in the gunfight. Boko Haram will step up its attacks to target phone service providers in Nigeria for cooperating with the authorities, allowing security agencies to track them down, Abu Qaqa, the purported spokesman who uses a voice-alteration device,said today by phone to reporters in the city before the military statement was issued.
Authorities in Africa’s top oil producer blame Boko Haram, which calls for the imposition of Shariah law in Nigeria, for bomb and gun attacks in northern Nigeria and the capital Abuja since 2009.
Boko Haram, whose name means “Western education is a sin,” claimed responsibility for multiple blasts and attacks in the northern city of Kano on Jan. 20, killing at least 256 people, according to the rights group Civil Rights Congress.
The group also vowed to attack the Nigerian Communications Commission, the regulatory authority for the telecommunications industry in the West African country.

Goverment should beging to second/embed Intelligence operatives in these companies to protect their assets. Also, I will advise that the companies themselves should beging to send some of their employes for Bomb Detection courses.

Officials of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in
Borno State and members of the Boko Haram yesterday differed on the number of casualties suffered by both sides, following a deadly encounter at Budun area of Maiduguri metropolis on Sunday night.
Spokesman for Boko Haram Abul Qaqa said in a teleconference in Maiduguri yesterday that his group killed 12 soldiers when they launched an ambush on JTF operatives at Budun on Sunday.
But JTF spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Hassan, who also spoke on phone debunked the claim, insisting that it was the JTF that killed 12 members of the Boko Haram during the encounter. “Our men had a gun duel with suspected Boko Haram members and we have killed 12 of them. Two of our members sustained minor injuries and are now receiving treatment in a hospital,” the JTF spokesman said. The Boko Haram spokesman also threatened that they would launch attacks on offices and installations of GSM service providers across the country.
He alleged that the GSM operators—MTN, Airtel and Glo—were conniving with security operatives in revealing call log data of Boko Haram members which was leading to the tracking down of the sect members. “We are also issuing similar threat to the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) for given directives to GSM operatives to release information on our movements,” Qaqa said.
Qaqa, who acknowledged that security operatives had re-arrested the alleged Christmas Day bomber, Kabiru Sokoto, said the development will not in any way deter them from launching fresh attacks. Musa Yaro, a resident of the area told Daily Trust that some members of the Boko Haram, who disguised in military uniforms, drove a military painted Hilux truck and waylaid the JTF operatives. The whole of Budun was cordoned off yesterday, a development which prevented journalists from getting access to the area.
The Sunday attack on the soldiers came barely 24 hours after the sect members in Maiduguri beheaded three persons.
Rantings of a group falling apart….boko haram will never prevail over the sensible majority…islam never justified killing innocent souls…how can u want sharia law in a country equally divided into christians and muslims? Sri lanka went through the same thing with the tamil tigers, pakistan is also coming out of it….in the end, the majority sensible ones will prevail…kudos to the nigerian army and the dss..i can safely say that we have one of the best armies in africa..
