  1. Just discovered your great blog, will sure add it to my rss. btw any idea what the standard issued rifle in the Nigeria Army is? Is it AK47?

    • joe says:

Yes, the standard issue rifle of the Nigerian army is the AK 47, although they still use the FN FAL sometimes, and also the Brigade of Guards, which is the president’s personal guards and also a part of the army, have the FAL as their standard issue weapon

Nice blog beegeagle, been reading for quite some time now. My question is, what are the chances that the military will stop using the AK47s as their standard weapon of choice?

Not very likely that it would be entirely relegated to the background anytime soon, buddy.

Even Special Forces train with this weapon, the thinking being that in COIN-CT operations, the likeliest weapon to be fielded by the adversary is the AK 47. Behind enemy lines and for the purpose of replenishment from the enemy’s stocks(thriving on the enemy’s goods so to speak), it does a lot for the survival of special operations and CT units operating anywhere in Africa which is likely to remain our likeliest battleground. And it makes sense.

If our COIN-CT chaps went into Chad, Cameroon, Mali or Niger today, never mind internal ops, the likelihood of the enemy wielding an AK47 is as high as 90%. We cannot afford not to capitalise on that boon.

What seems likely is that additionally, the NA’s COIN-CT units could field Tavor or F2000 assault rifles with Fighting in Built-Up Areas/close quarter combat in view.

But delete the AK47? It does not even seem to be a smart idea unless our primary interventions are going to take place outside the Third World.

Makes a lot of sense, on the issues of urban warfare and CQC, is the military implementing that in its doctrine? I just hope they take the fight to those Boko Haram bastards wherever they might be. I suggest they do what the US and other western countries do. Go to the source and fight them. Mail, chad, Niger, Cameroon. A heavy hand is needed. Again, love your blog.

the AK47, is a very effective and powerful rifel, very ruged and will peform as expected in combat even if it is not properly oiled it is highiy reliable. it has the ability to fire 800 rounds in a minuteits effective range is well over 400m which is the standard for target pratice. it carries a magazine of 30 rounds although the 40 rounds magazine exists today but you need proper training to get your target.

  4. god bless nigerian army
