In Nigeria, the Police Force are an organ of the Federal Government. However, indifferent levels of provisioning has seen massive interventions by all state governments in the realm of hardware acquisition.
In this regard, the efforts of the Lagos State Government remain unmatched nationwide. Since 2009, the Lagos State Government (LASG) have provided well over 400 4WD trucks, 30 Armoured Personnel Carriers, two Bell 412 helicopters and six river gunboats to the Lagos State Police Command as tokens of operational support. They have additionally provided Kevlar helmets, flak jackets and communication equipment.
The LASG have typically provided APCs manufactured by this same hardware supplier said to be a South African firm, albeit an obscure one.
Other states have also been massively supporting the operations of the Police Commands domiciled within their states by providing APCs (typically manufactured in South Africa or Israel), 4WD trucks and sundry materiel. Some of the littoral states, such as Akwa Ibom, provided eleven river gunboats armed with 12.7mm machine guns and 40mm automatic grenade launchers to the joint security outfit “OP ADUMA” while the Rivers State Government paid for the training of 300 Red Berets of the Police Anti Terrorism Squad in Israel.
During the course of these past six months, the Kano State Government have provided 140 4WD trucks for the Kano State Police Command while the state governments of Edo and Imo have each provided 100 4WD trucks for the Police, with the Edo State Government throwing in a handful of APCs into the mix.
