NIGERIAN ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Organisation of the NAE

The current structure of the NAE is
derived from NA ORBAT 96, and the
various ammendments implemented in
line with AHQ policy directives. The NAE is organized as follows.

* HQ Nigerian Army Engineers

HQ NAE coordinates and manages the
affairs of the Corps. The HQ is located in
Bonny Cantonment, Lagos.

* Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering

NASME is responsible for training of the
officers and soldiers of the Corps. It also
encompasses the Institute of Technology
and Environmental Studies which is
equivalent to a Polytechnic.

* Directorate of Army Works (DAW).

DAW plans, executes and coordinates all
major projects being handled by the
Corps.

* Directorate of Army Real Estate (DARE)

DARE takes custody and manages all NA
fixed assets all over the nation.

* FIVE Divisional Engineers formations (each equivalent to a brigade), one each to a maneouvre division. These provide engineering support to the maneuver divisions.

Each Div Engrs is composed of

– HQ Garrison – (Squadron-sized)
– 1 X Field Engineers Regiment
– 1 X Support Engineers Regiment
– 1 X Div Engr Admin Squadron
– Cantonment M’ntenance Groups (CMGs)
– Barracks Maintenance Groups(BMGs)

The number of CMGs and BMGs depends on the number of cantonments and barracks within the division area of responsibility.

* Directorate of Army Mapping and
Survey (DAMS).

DAMS is saddled with the task of surveying and mapping of NA lands. The
Directorate also produces maps of any
area within Nigeria. It is composed of Field Survey Unit and a Mapping Unit.

*Engineers Construction Regiment (ECR).

ECR is responsible for the execution of
major engineering projects in the NA

* Army HQ Engr Maint Group(AHQ EMG)

AHQ EMG is responsible for the
maintenance of all cantonments and
barracks under the AHQ Garrison.

* Engineer Search and Disposal Unit(ESADU)

ESADU is responsible for the disposal of
any unexploded bombs or improvised
explosive devices that may occur within
the country.

Each of the five maneouvre divisions of the NA(1 Mechanised Div, 2 Mechanised Div, 3 Armoured Div, 82 Composite Div and 81 Div) are supported by five Div NA Engrs formations – each one of them the size of a full-strength brigade.

41 Div Engrs support 1 Mechanised Div

    – 11 Field Engineers Regiment
    – 21 Support Engineers Regiment
    – a squadron-sized HQ Garrison
    – an Admin Engrs Squadron
    – Cantonment Mtce Groups(CMGs)
    – Barracks Mtce Groups(BMGs)

42 Div Engrs support 2 Mechanised Div

    – 12 Field Engineers Regiment
    – 22 Support Engineers Regiment
    – a squadron-sized HQ Garrison
    – an Admin Engrs Squadron
    – Cantonment Mtce Groups(CMGs)
    – Barracks Mtce Groups(BMGs)

43 Div Engrs support 3 Armoured Div

    – 13 Field Engineers Regiment
    – 23 Support Engineers Regiment
    – a squadron-sized HQ Garrison
    – an Admin Engrs Squadron
    – Cantonment Mtce Groups(CMGs)
    – Barracks Mtce Groups(BMGs)

44 Div Engrs support 82 Composite Div

    – 14 Field Engineers Regiment
    – 24 Support Engineers Regiment
    – a squadron-sized HQ Garrison
    – an Admin Engrs Squadron
    – Cantonment Mtce Groups(CMGs)
    – Barracks Mtce Groups(BMGs)

45 Div Engrs support 81 Division

    – 15 Field Engineers Regiment
    – 25 Support Engineers Regiment
    – a squadron-sized HQ Garrison
    – an Admin Engrs Squadron
    – Cantonment Mtce Groups(CMGs)
    – Barracks Mtce Groups(BMGs)

Right there you have TEN Engineers regiments, TWENTY detached Engrs Squadrons and a minimum of 100+ BMGs+CMGs. Mind you, there is an independent Construction Engrs Regiment under HQ NA Engineers. That is a total of 11 constituted regiments and 20 Squadrons(how many regiments would that amount to?) – not counting over a hundred BMQs and CMQs whose collective strength makes would make for five regiments plus the CER and independent units?

Well researched well done nice picture of what is compnents of a bailey bridge or a pontoon bridge
    being carried in the truck.

  3. doziex says:

    Oga jimmy make I try.

A bailey bridge is a prefabricated bridge, with small truck portable parts.

A pontoon bridge, is basically a bridge assembled on pontoon barges.

You also have bridge layers, that carry a fully functional bridge on a tank chassis.

I still have primary school memories of NA assembling bailey bridges during training operations on NTA.
The US army constructed one of the biggest pontoon bridges in the dead of winter as they moved an entire armored division from germany into bosnia, to end that civil war.

The iraqi army during gulf war one, constructed massive pontoon bridges to replace the real bridges blown up by the allied forces. Only to have the pontoons blown up the next day by the same laser guided bombs.

And lastly, after the initial set backs from the surprise arab attacks during the yom kippur holiday, the IDF counter attacked with an armored column led by the then Major General ariel Sharon. They split the egyptian army in two at the battle of the chinese farm. Then crossed the suez canal with pontoons and prefabbed bridges into egypt proper under fire, trapping an entire army or corps of the egyptian army in the sinai desert.

Boy !!! those guys(IDF) can fight.
