The Army Headquarters Garrison, Abuja yesterday issued a statement saying it will conduct a training exercise codenamed ‘Exercise Thunderstorm’ meant to teach young soldiers the methods of tackling contemporary attacks including explosives disposal.The exercise will hold in Sabon Wuse, Niger state and residents were asked not panic should they notice unusual troops movement or hear deafening noise.
The Deputy Director, Army Public Relations Lieutenant Colonel O. A. Ochaguba said in the statement “this is to inform the general public that Army Headquarters Garrison will conduct ‘Exercise Thunderstorm’ in the general area of Sabon Wuse,along Abuja-Kaduna expressway between May 26 and 31.
“The exercise will mark the end of a 6- week rigorous cadre that began on April 8 2013.The exercise which is in line with the Chief of Army Staff vision,is designed to teach young soldiers skills and techniques required to deal with contemporary security challenges in counter terrorism such as urban and rural operations, identification and handling of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
“The general public is advised not to panic when firing is heard in the exercise area or they see troops’ movement in the area. The exercise will end with battle innoculation in Kachia, Kaduna state on May 29.”
