Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General for West
Africa, Said Djinnit, has pledged to provide more support to Nigeria in its
fight against terrorism by strengthening
the nation’s capacity.

Djinnit made the pledge when he led his
team to visit Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Olugbenga Ashiru, in Abuja on Tuesday. Djinnit doubles as the Chairman of
Nigeria/Cameroon Mixed Commission. He stated that the purpose of his visit
was to see how peace and democracy
could be entrenched in Africa and the
world, as well as how the emerging
common threat of trans-national border
crime and insurgency could be tackled head on.

The UN chieftain, therefore, sought
regional collaboration, particularly the
support of ECOWAS, African Union (EU)
and UN, towards solving the challenges
being posed by trans-national threat. “I believe we could do more of what we
are doing now. A number of delegations
have come here from the counter-
terrorism institutions from the UN and
some of them are currently here.

“So, we have been working closely with
Nigeria as we have been working with
other African countries and West African
countries for that matter.

“I am also pleased with the effort of Nigeria in fighting piracy in the Gulf of
Guinea and I have been following very
closely this issue,” Djinnit stressed. He added: “This is the way forward; what
we are doing on the seaside should also
be done on the land. That means that all
countries of the region, like this region;
Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Benin,
etc, should work together in fighting common threat.

“And the UN is here to support the
capacity of Nigeria to fight this scourge
but with due respect to human rights,
which I am sure the government of
Nigeria is fully committed and aware of”
