The Special Task Force (STF) in Plateau State has commissioned 25 solar powered boreholes it rehabilitated in some crisis ridden communities of Riyom, Barkin Ladi and Jos South Local Government Areas of the state.

The gesture, according to STF Commander,Major General Henry Ayoola, is part of the STF’s commitment to ensuring that lasting peace returns to the state. “We have to show concern towards the welfare of the people we are securing. This is one of the ways of showing love and care to the people in these communities,’’ he said.

Major General Ayoola added that the STF recently initiated the “One Plateau Peace Initiative” in order to reconcile warring communities and persons. He advised people of communities to jealously guard the boreholes and to learn to live in peace with one another.

Plateau State Governor, Jonah David Jang, who was represented by his deputy, Ignatinus Longjang, commended the people for embracing peace, but lamented the lack of maintenance culture of citizens of the state and called on them to make good use of the boreholes.

Now this is what I call winning the hearts and minds of the people. I hope that the army engineer corp is expanded and funded to keep doing this. The solar boreholes may be small steps, but on deed they are giant steps. Bravo

Nice One – Nigerian Army. Am also impressed with the level of professionalism being exhibited by our boys in dealing with the BH terrorist insurgency in the North East.

The Commander is an engineer by training – trained at UNIFE and UNILAG. Perhaps that explains the ‘civil works’ inclination. He is also a Pastor.

Regardless, the AOR is a lot quieter than it was between 2009 and 2012. Last year, it was a heady mix of genocidal action by ethnic militiamen in highland villages and terrorist action by Boko Haram in metropolitan Jos.

The AOR covers Plateau State and parts of Bauchi State (Toro, Tafawa Balewa etc). Peace building measures, town hall meetings, inter-religious and inter-ethnic dialogue championed by General Ayoola and COMPOL Emmanuel Ayeni have been going on in tandem with enforcement measures – such as clearing the highland villages of suspected ethnic militiamen and forcibly disarming them. More peace on the beautiful Plateau, we say.

Jos has always been one of my favorite holiday destinations and my wingmen, gentlemen officers, are still at the 3 Armoured Division. We need to enjoy a Tombola night together again (makes me remember the now-deceased bubbly dentist and PMC Member, Lieutenant Aminu who died about six years ago), go to the “West of Mines” area for barbecued beef and drinks outdoors at nights and drink hot cups of tea in the early evening to fight off the chills of the Rukuba Cantonment where it is cold and the ‘wind whistles’ while listening to rivetting stories from the ECOMOG years in Sierra Leone.

3 nights – Friday to Sunday should do🙂
