Yesterday was the BUSIEST DAY EVER on this blog and as I write, we are set to shatter that record with six hours left till midnight. Another ALL-TIME RECORD for site traffic was set at 1800hrs GMT. Imagine where we shall be at midnight. Oga beeg sir we should be looking at 2 x type 054 frigate not one reason being if one of them is on periodic maintance or down for whatever reason as NNS Aradu is today, we have the other on hot standby for our nation. We all must bear in mind that why we are left without a functioning frigate today is because we only had one. Today, Aradu is not functioning, if there is any treat from our neighbours today you & I knows what its mean, having frigate in pairs garantees us the services of atleast one frigate and hopefully other missile armed FAC like the type 037. Please us root for 2 of this frigates in addition to the above mention platforms. Thanks for the previllege to vent my veiw on this platform. God bless Nigeria
This Mi 171sh Chopper is really exciting. We will need these choppers in more numbers because when BH is cleared, there will need to garrison a lot of towns in the border areas and they will come in handy. They can be called in when trouble comes in and with its carrying capacity of up to 30 troops, and guided rockets and smart missiles, this will be the deterrent to any future trouble making terror group.
It is sobering to recall some of anguish in the form of blogging during the dark days of 2013 and 2014.

recently read literature on MI series helicopter operations and tactics by the soviets in afgan war.their use of firebombs (must be thermobaric bombs) for area clearance as well as their physicological effect made interesting read .

Can you please explain to us, why the indian government has failed to properly invest in the infantry man, kitting, rifle et al? Your infantry men look like soldiers from “3rd world” armies, and they misrepresent the true size of the indian military.
This problem isn’t restricted to basic infantry men alone, I once spotted an indian S.F wearing afghani/world war 2 army style helmets.
your question is valid but if u should know that the Indian Army is the world’s second largest army in terms of military personnel, and the largest in terms of active manpower.

recently india has activated 2 mountain divisions against tibet front consisting of nearly 60000 to 80000 soldiers so the numbers of soldiers are much more.
with such a huge army if u induct new equipments and clothing it takes time 3-4 years or even more.u cannot replace items at one go. also equipments are procured in a step by step or staggered way which leads to delay.
since india is a democracy army is dependent on the good will of the govenment in power.
last 10 years congress government nearly destroyed the war fighting capability but the present BJP goverment is seriously enhancing the armed forces.
also the clothes worn by the soldiers may look faded or worn out but rest assured they were worn out in line of duty they are not there to make fashion statement but to

The LCH is not in production , the NAF can look into the KAZAN Ansat (medevac,light recon)

A GHATAK SOLDIER
Yogendra Singh Yadav
Who Was He?
Yogendra Singh Yadav was a member of an Indian grenadier battalion during a conflict with Pakistan in 1999. Their mission was to climb “Tiger Hill” (actually a big-ass mountain), and neutralize the three enemy bunkers at the top. Unfortunately, this meant climbing up a sheer hundred-foot cliff-face of solid ice. Since they didn’t want to all climb up one at a time with ice-axes, they decided they’d send one guy up, and he’d fasten the ropes to the cliff as he went, so everyone else could climb up the sissy way. Yadav, being awesome, volunteered.
Half way up the icy cliff-o’-doom, enemies stationed on an adjacent mountain opened fire, shooting them with an RPG, then spraying assault-rifle fire all over the cliff. Half his squad was killed, including the commander, and the rest were scattered and disorganized. Yadav, in spite of being shot three times, kept climbing.
When he reached the top, one of the target bunkers opened fire on him with machine guns. Yadav ran toward the hail of bullets, pitched a grenade in the window and killed everyone inside. By this point the second bunker had a clear shot and opened fire, so he ran at them, taking bullets while he did, and killed the four heavily-armed men inside with his bare hands.
Meanwhile, the remainder of his squad was standing at the top of the cliff staring at him saying, “dude, holy shit!” They then all went and took the third bunker with little trouble.
For his gallantry and sheer ballsiness, he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military award. Unlike the Medal of Honor, the Param Vir Chakra is only given for “rarest of the rare gallantry which is beyond the call of duty and which in normal life is considered impossible to do.” That’s right, you actually have to break the laws of reality just to be eligible.
And we imagine the medal looks like two, brass testicles.
It has only been awarded 21 times, and two thirds of the people who earned it died in the process. It was initially reported that Yadav had as well, but it turns out that they just mistook him for someone less badass. Or they just figured no real human being could survive a broken leg, shattered arm and 10-15 fresh bullet holes in one sitting.

McClane has a fairly impressive resume of badassery, climbing through elevator shafts and killing terrorists with his bare hands, much like Yadav, except Yadav took more bullets in 10 minutes than McClane did in the entire series without even slowing down. Plus, he was fucking 19-years-old! Try to imagine a high school Bruce Willis screaming, “yippee ki-yay, m**********r!”

i have also seen indian soldiers wearing ww2 type helmets but this is new to me . i believe
it might be a pakistani soldier .the photos gets mixed up all the time u know.
even the armed policemen in india wear better helmets than this one.
the machine gun he is holding is the miami machine gun indian army does not use it.
but it is used by pakistan.

Do you have info on the developments the IR suppression area?. Read somewhere a company saying they could actually mask an MBT that it does not show up at all on infra red detection equipment. They could not mask the tracks though.
yes the system exists for tanks it is called BRACCUDA MOBILE CAMOUFLAGE SYSTEM
it is made by sweden i think. it is used in ARJUN MBT.i have a picture of it .
in the visual spectrum the tank almost blends with the surrounding terrain almost impossible to detect from 100m onwards.
in the infra red spectrum it makes detection by IR sensors very difficult, i guess the sensors cant make make it out against the background as the IR signature of the tank is almost same as the background environment temperature.it is a good force multiplyer technology.
for the helicopters the americans have the IR suppression tech on the apaches. they use liquid cooling tech to cool down the exhaust gases plus the exhaust gases are directed up ward towards the rotors for dispersing the hot gases hence the IR signature is reduced. but this system has weight penalties and is expensive and maintenance heavy.
in the indian LCH if u will notice the picture posted above ,on the side of the mesh covered air intakes there is a auxillary intake which takes in and forces cooler air (not sure, but liquid coolents may be added to further lower the IR signature) to mix with the hot exhaust gases coming out of the exhaust and then the resulting cooled exhaust gases are directed upwards towards the rotors for dispersing the gases thus the IR signature is significantly reduced.it is simple but innovative way of reducing the IR signature.

well indian army has placed order for 114 lch and airforce 65 the no of orders might go up.
considering the recent emphasis on exporting miliary hardware by the present government and if manufacturing is given to the private sector expect it to be ready for export in 2-3 years timeframe fingers crossed.

it is called the RUDRA WSI it weapons and avionics are same as that of LCH .
u can call it a more advanced version of armed MI 17 HELICOPTER.it can carry troops also like the mi 17.

Time….reaction time is very important in combat, if the heavy Mi-171 is landing troops or about to land troops in a hostile zone and FLIR or eyesight detects enemy anti-aircraft Toyota truck threatening the helicopter, the heavy bird has no time to maneuver and reposition to start aiming unguided rocket, it needs to lock on enemy target AAA and quickly discharge a thermobaric anti-tank guided missile to destroy the Boko anti-aircraft gun mounted Toyota before we lose our expensive multi-million dollar fine-girl helicopter, two expensive overseas trained pilots and expensive lives of 30 Nigerian soldiers who are on a mission that is so important it required the urgency/mobility of helicopter transportation to deploy them.
War history shows many army missions failed because the helicopter inserting the troops was defenseless or too slow to defend itself and the special mission troops got wiped out plus their helicopter and pilots. Happened a lot in Vietnam war.
This is cutting-edge technology. It is not a two-a-penny airframe. What we can do to achieve that effect is acquire pre-owned Mi-17 helicopters at US $4 million apiece (the Terminator costs four or five times as much).
So with those pre-owned Mi-17s, we can equip them with FLIR pods for day-night operations and then have them rigged with rockets and ground attack missiles. That way, for a unit cost of US$5m we could have any number of weaponised Mi-17s to operate alongside these state-of-the-art Terminator assault helicopters.
ELSEWHERE, BEEGEAGLE WROTE
As an aside, gentlemen, you might recall that we have often called for the FG to splash out a token $80 million on the acquisition of eight units each of upgraded Mi-24V attack helics and Mi-17V5 multimission helics from Russian surplus stocks.
Well, here is what should be a Mi-17 transport helic steeled up to no end and in effect, transformed to an assault helic. 33 troops embarked and six rocket pods contained many, many dozens of rockets. What manner of stampede would this trigger off in the skies over an insurgents’ base?
Ruggedness, versatility and extreme durability in all adverse conditions. That is the Mi-17. We need these as allied assets behind the Mi-171Sh Terminator helics.
just imagine this scenario u have 1-2 uav providing real time surveillance and keeping track of insurgents present say in a village.
a task force comprising of 80 – 120 SF soldiers climb up into 8 mi17 helicopters armed with rocket pods.
then u have another 6-8 mi 24 attack helicopters.armed with combination of automatic cannons ,rockets and bombs.
let u assume there are 2 chock points.
first 2 mi 24 flies ahead and clears the landing zone near the chock points while the are on the look out for bogies trying to come close to the LZ.one by one the mi 17 unloads half the forces.
similarly the next the LZ near the next chock point is cleared and rest of the forces are offloaded.
meanwhile the mi 24 keeps straffing the strongholds and and armoured vehicals plus any technicals.
feed from the uavs is analysed real time to pinpoint areas in the hands of the insurgents
plus troops already spread out on the flanks also provide info on enemy movements,call strike as necessary.
the mi17 joins the party using massive fire power, each unloads 120 rockets each.imagine the destruction
the troops close in clearing the village block by block.
all the while the mi 24 hover taking out targets of opportunity and making sure that insurgents dont get close to the troops clearing the area house by house .
plus any retreat or escaping terrorist is detected by the uavs or helis are take care of by the roving mi 24.further the two chockpoints blocks any chance of escape impossible.
two mi 17 having fired off all their rocket is taken in for proving medical evacuations for injured soldiers if any

You are a military man, Lachit. Ditto Bharat. Glad to have you both here. You guys bought several squadrons of armed Mi-17V5s for the Indian Air Force lately, right? Which aircraft do the IA use for air assault?
during the kargil war the mi 17 with rocket pods were used but with mixed results. they were not equipped with counter measures so were prone to SAM plus it the height they were operating made things difficult .
i believe these new mi 17 will be used mainly for transportation.
and will be armed if venturing into defended enemy areas.maybe not sure they will be pressed into assault roles like clearing LZ, mop up,suppressive fire.
as of now MI35 is used for assault ,but in the plane areas cant operate in high altitude.
the dedicated task of heli warfare will be handled by apaches( if bought ), LCH and RUDRA
u see RUDRA WSI and MI 17 almost occupy the same niche.but the RUDRA is more modern with way better avionics and counter measure systems.
You guys are spatially scaling it all wrong. No army lands choppers with troops in the middle of battle in real life. Too many uncontrollables and there is always the odd unforeseen hero who sacrifices himself to launch an RPG. So that shit only happens in the movies (permit the expression) and a few stupid real life US Army Ranger situations that were turned into box office smash hits ….but then American stupidity is an entitlement from God himself.
Most battlefield situations involve insertions at least 1 to 2km away that is reasonably stand off enough to achieve the objective. Also clearing the area of boogies and securing it actually involves taking out only forward elements of advancing enemy troops which are about 1km away.
The MI 171sh can do that on its own and can also be supported by MI 24s. The troops landing themselves usually pack considerable portable firepower Carl Gustavs, RPGs, AGLs, MGLs, mortars etc. even artillery pieces can be towed and delivered shortly after a landing.
For SF type missions like the killing of OBL, I wont recommend MI 171sh at all both from the standpoint of absence of stealth and the lack of agility.
Oga Are James, in Vietnam war, US helicopters land inside battlefield on their own side of the frontline and behind enemy lines when troops have been inserted for ops or cut-off by enemy advance. It happens, and chopper takes fire from enemy it did not see before getting into range.
Why are many transport helicopters armed with heavy weapons if they only operate in safe zones, to shoot their own troops?

u did not read properly
firstly i mentioned a scenario about a village under enemy occupation
secondly i mentioned chock points. chockpoints which are used as landing zones,they are always established at the enemies flanks.
nowbody in his right mind including me would establish chockpoints/LZ right in the middle of the enemy forces.it is common sense.
some enemy forces are always to be expected in chockpoints .do u think they are stupid not to take precautions therefore the initial attack by mi24s to clear these areas.
u need to know about the operating precedures of the air cavalary just google it.

why did u think i mentioned UAVS for real time surviellance .they are there to identify poential targets in real time and vector air strikes against it.
do u know how the RPG works or anything about the detonating fuse time delay. u simply cant point a rpg vertically up and fire away at a heli .the blowback from the fired round is going to spoil the aim and burn up the shooter plus maybe end up killing himself or his friends.
plus there is there is the question of time delay fuse.most of the time the round is going to explode even before reaching the heli.
also the the rpg cannot be fired from enclosed spaces he has to come out in the open.
and that is when he dies.
also no pilot worth is salt is going to fly his heli within the firing envelope of enemies weapons.
the UAVs i mentioned would have generated enough intel before hand for the pilots to be briefed before going on the mission.they are always going to engage the enemy out of the range of the enemies guns.

this involves considerable amount of time the enemy will be alerted by the massing of troops and equipments. surely the will have spies close to army/airforce bases.

Who is comparing 1964 or so Vietnam war to modern war? Wars do evolve and Things can be done in a smarter way as compared to previous wars without risking a chopper full of troops, too great a risk, especially with boko haram launching RPGs all over the place. Safe landing is preferred , no need to be too heroic, one bullet can end a life.
Me thinks the Indians know they cannot hope to match the Chinese military on land so they hope to compensate for this on water. At a time China ‘ Navy is just beginning to practise the art of Carrier operations and barely have one fully operational the Indian Navy have at least a 10 years head start. India and Japan have the only true blue water (allbeit limited) Navy in Asia.

@OgaOje, point taken. However, China is outspending India 3-1 in naval matters. Last year the PLA Navy spent about USD186 billion while the Indian Navy spent USD84billion or so. China is building naval bases all around India and that is worrisome for many naval buffs in India. Most Indian naval platforms are quite old, as the Indian media have reported in the last three months and several accidents have been occurring on board Indian naval above-water and below surface platforms. However, India is a more experienced maritime power that China. The question is, what must Delhi do to maintain that and also to counter the growing Chinese threat?

Seeing this article of Ghana Air Force Terminator help has just reinforced my withheld opinion that ours isn’t the expected haul of six but an upgraded older platform from one of the Eastern block nations.

Rounded glass frontage is to facilitate day time ground surveillance. My issue is the lack of identifying marks for NAF and the absence of FLIR and more advanced weapons. So maybe it is a forward ‘used’ acquisition pending the main order from Russia. Good buy all the same.
My point is, it is an old design from the Mi-8 stable. The new designs feature a glassless rounded frontage with openings to facilitate landings. I also understand your point regarding the roundels.

I do not think there is any question about the fact that the NAF have an order for brand-new Mi-35M attack helics (6) and Mi-171Sh Terminator assault helics (12) from Russia. If any weaponised Mi-17s get thrown into that mix, it would be for added value and to deepen our air assault capabilities.

The NAF have obtained presidential approval for the replacement of four Mi-24V/35P attack helics lost to accidents and in combat. Those are most probably going to come from Ukraine. Simultaneously, we have also said that there are 3-4 pre-owned units of Mi-17s coming from Ukraine. Those are very likely to be weaponised.
At another level, we shall be getting 12 pre-owned Mi-24V/35P attack helicopters from Belarus.
Lately and totally from the blue, the NAF moved to plug the capability gap in the area of armed scout helicopters by acquiring Gazelle helicopters.
