A pioneer cadet(Regular Course 1) of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Dogonyaro saw action during the Nigerian Civil War of 1967-1970. He also served in Lebanon and as a Colonel in 1980, served as the Commander of the Nigerian Neutral Force in Chad.
Dogonyaro is a former General Officer Commanding, 3 Armoured Division and later rose to become Chief of Defence Staff. He retired on the rank of Lieutenant General in 1993. Now aged 70, he is well-respected and plays a lead role in the consultative efforts by Elders and Leaders of Thought aimed at restoring peace to his native Plateau State.
Dogonyaro hails from Langtang, a town in Plateau State which is famous for having produced an formidable array of influential brasshats such as Major General Joseph Garba of blessed memory, General Domkat Yah Bali, Lt General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, Brigadier General John Nanzip Shagaya, among others too numerous to mention.

There are, Agee, even as I cannot give you details off the top of my head, It is however instructive to note that there were no medals so awarded during the Nigerian Civil War because, officially, it was a fight between brothers and as such, gallantry was out of the question. How noble 🙂

Correct, that is unmistakeably a Shilka SPAAG, a system which has acquired a huge reputation for itself for its tremendous rate of fire of its 23mm cannons and its devastating effect on the battlefield when fired in flat trajectory.
Yeah but also its short range…..the army should do away with this as its primary spaag, and use more modern system….that use 37mm guns,with missiles….. Even the USA A10 jet, can’t be brought down by this caliber of gun system……
May God bless those guys who are still alive and repose the souls of the dead whose efforts and gallantry is not unnoticed and is the simple reason our name Nigeria is still been respected no matter what people say or think.

This is our problem in this country, heroes past are not celebrated. Our adventures in liberia and sirrea-leone should be taught in history classes in schools across the nation, our t.v stations should be awash with our expliots in liberia and SLR. Instead of disturbing my t.v with news of how prince william and his wife kate are expecting their first child, as if that’s my problem, that’s british tax payer problem.
It is acts like these that inspire patriotism in the citizenry. It cannot be bought, we have earned it. RESPECT. Let us beam it out to the nation and the world in general, so that our children and generation yet un born would never forget the exploits and bravery of these men. Peace be unto them.

Hmn..those were the days, the heydey of the now-receded FN-FAL and G3 rifles. Back then, we probably had G3/FN-FAL and AK47s in a 7.5:2.5 ratio. Today, the AK47 probably accounts for 75% of rifle holdings in the Nigerian Army.
Evolution steeped in lessons of yesteryears..on (the incomparable ruggedness+stopping power of the AK47) and off the battlefield(sanctions)
Fabrique National have nonetheless made fresh inroads with special operations rifles such as the F2000 which the SSS sling alongside Tavor TAR 21 rifles.
Nice pictures, but they seem to be the only ones on public record. I guess NA combat camera men burned all their copies.
Our mowags and 90 mm sagaies were cool, but in an rpg and land mine infested environment, other systems may have fared better.
I like the shilka. firing anti aircraft systems, at street level is key in present day warfare. NA must learn to use, and counter this system.
We also see the ever present US sponsored PMC pacific engineers Trucks. Naija spent 10 billion usd, but couldn’t by their own damn trucks. just saying………
