Nigeria will send 142 policemen to Guinea-Bissau as part of the ECOWAS mission, ECOMIB, being deployed to that country to support the restoration of constitutional rule, provide security for VIPs and guarantee the freedom of movement of humanitarian agencies in the country.
Acting Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar announced the planned deployment at the weekend, but did not say how soon the policemen would be sent. Nigeria is also expected to contribute 160 soldiers to the 629-strong regional force that will replace Angolan troops in Guinea-Bissau, which was thrown into a fresh crisis in April when soldiers toppled the constitutional order and stopped the planned presidential runoff.
Apart from Nigeria, countries expected to contribute troops to ECOMIB are Burkina Faso, which has already sent in the first batch of 170 policemen,Senegal and Cote d’Ivoire. Togo is on standby to send in troops, if necessary, PANA learnt from sources close to the force, which is being commanded by Col. Gnibanga Barro.
