The Spanish Navy Friday in Lagos,
exempted Nigeria from one of the
pirate prone regions On the African
continent, clarifying that the only
maritime challenge plaguing the
country was sea robbery. This assertion, has apparently disclaimed reports by the
International Maritime Bureau which
listed Nigeria and four other African
countries along the continent’s sea
coast as areas prone to pirate attacks.
The Commanding Officer, Spanish
Navy Ship MV RELAMPAGO, Lt Commander Tanago De La Lastra, made the clarification during a joint press briefing with the Nigerian Navy at the Naval Training Command, NAVTRAC, Apapa Lagos. Lieutenant Commander Lastra whose country’s ship arrived Lagos Thursday, disclosed that currently, only Somalia was experiencing piracy attacks, a worrisome development, he said. He,however, expressed satisfaction
over Nigerian Navy’s (NN)effort to tackle maritime insecurity in the country as well as its overwhelming presence in the Gulf of Gunea, informing that during his ship’s six months tour of six countries within the African continent, insecurity on the waterways was not as high as it was projected.
Earlier, the Commander Operations of
the Western Naval Command, Rear
Admiral Henry Babalola, explained that during the three-day visit of the Spanish Navy ship, training of NN personnel on how to tackle evolving maritime challenges would be carried out.
Already, he disclosed that before entering Lagos harbour, the Spanish
ship carried out exercises offshore Lagos with NNS NWAMBA and NNS ANDONI,two NN warships.
More of the visits and training.FG should buy more platforms for the navy
This is good news. There is no word like ‘over-training’, is there?
Lt Commander Tanago sir, I know you have to be ‘diplomatic’ when you are on Flag showing/Joint training mission like this one, but the truth of the matter is that there is piracy in our waters. It may not be as bad as some international media are projecting it and it may not be as bad as the one in Somalia. But it has gone beyond mere robbery, its Piracy. Help us to tackle it in whatever way you can.
Everyone is suddenly appearing in our EEZ with shiny OPVs. Perhaps they are here to whet our appetite, knowing that the NN are positioning for big ships aplenty under their 10-Year Strategic Acquisition Plan.
The Brazilians, the French with their GOWIND L’Adroit and now, the Spaniards with the BAM Maritime Action class. Let them COME. We need as many new and used ships as we can get.
Here is what the RELAMPAGO looks like
SPANISH-BUILT(NAVANTIA)BAM MARITIME ACTION SHIP (priced at US$116 MILLION)
Displacement: 2,500 t (full load)

@ Marshal Beeg, question sir. Do you know if there’s also n acquisition plan by the Nigerian Airforce?
This Spanish ship design has a look and feel of some stealth technology incorporated into it.
